Rita J. Sawyer, 89, Watertown

WATERTOWN, NY —  Rita J. Sawyer (affectionately known as Jean), 89, passed away peacefully on Feb. 18, 2021, at Samaritan Summit Village where she had been a resident since 2013.

She was born Nov. 21, 1931, in Watertown, a daughter of the late Edward and Rita (Sherman) Sawyer.

A lifelong resident of Watertown, Rita was always known as Jean or Little Jean. Even though Jean was little, she could do everything a big girl could do. She was a very independent, proud and loving person to all that knew her.

Jean worked for many years at Art’s Jug cleaning the kitchen from top to bottom and for the Sboro’s family. She also worked doing daily cleaning in the homes of some of the most prominent people in Watertown. She would take a cab (only when needed) but most of the time, you would see her walking to work. Jean also took care of her mother until her passing.

Rita is survived by her sister-in-law, Suzanna Sawyer, and many nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, Jean was predeceased by her sisters, Gladys Maynes and Dacie Colella, and her dearly loved brother, John (Bud) Sawyer.

She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

The family would like to dearly thank the staff at Samaritan Summit Village 2nd floor for all the love and care that they gave to Jean in which she adored very much. Jean was one of a kind.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at her sister-in-law’s home.
