CHAUMONT, NY – LTC (Ret) Robert I. Buckland, 71, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, April 18, 2019.
He was born April 11, 1948, in Syracuse, NY, the son of Robert H. and M. Barbara (Lang) Buckland.
Following his graduation from Central Technical High School in Syracuse, he attended Canton ATC graduating with an Associate’s Degree in Mechanical Technology. He obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from Penn State University while on active duty in the United States Army.
Bob served his country as a commissioned officer for over 27 years, spending 13 years on active duty, and finishing his military career in the U.S. Army Reserves. He was employed by the Veteran’s Administration as a Senior Programmer Analyst for 12 years, retiring in October of 2018.
Bob was an active member of the Catholic Community of Cape Vincent, Rosiere and Chaumont and enjoyed many volunteer activities with his parish family.
Bob was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He loved spending time with his family and friends, and enjoyed many outdoor activities, especially ice fishing this past winter.
Surviving is his loving wife of 49 years Karen, three sons: Robert J. (Debra), Rome, NY, Brian (Erica), Phoenix, NY, and Kevin (Margaret), Poughkeepsie, NY; 5 grandchildren, Elizabeth (Lizzy), Emma, Emily, Eva and Cara, all at home ; three sisters, Sally (Owen) Densk, Baldwinsville, NY, Colleen (Wayne) Nicholson, Clay, NY, and Maureen (Susie) Buckland, West Monroe, NY; a sister-in-law, Sandra Elen, Liverpool, NY, and several nieces and nephews.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Cleveland Funeral Home in Watertown.
There will be no calling hours at this time but a memorial Mass and burial service with military honors will be held at a later date.
Bob was a lifelong lover of all animals, and in lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Bob’s memory to “Caring for Cats Foundation”, P.O. Box 72, Three Mile Bay, NY 13693.
