Ruth E. Curtis, 104, formerly of Phoenix

LOWVILLE, NY – Ruth E. Curtis, 104, formerly of Phoenix, NY, died early Sunday morning, June 24, 2018 at the Lewis County Residential Healthcare Facility, where she has resided since May 2015.

The funeral service will be noon Wednesday, June 27, 2018, at Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc. with Rev. Bruce W. Chapman, officiating. A calling hour will be from 11 a.m. to noon Wednesday prior to the funeral service at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery, Copenhagen.

Ruth was born Nov. 23, 1913, in Montague, NY, a daughter of the late William and Della McIntyre Curtis. She graduated from Lowville Academy in 1929 as valedictorian of her class and from State Normal School, Potsdam, NY, in 1932.

She began teaching in one room school houses throughout Upstate New York. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education 1948 from Potsdam and her Master’s degree in 1966 from Potsdam. Ruth made her home in Phoenix, NY and taught elementary school, retiring in 1972, after 17 years.

Ruth was a member of the United Methodist Church of Phoenix, where she was a Sunday school teacher for many years, and belonged to a Topics Club in Phoenix. She was an avid reader and a philanthropist.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews, who she was close with, great nieces and nephews, and great- great nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her siblings, Genevieve Snyder, Harold Curtis, Leta Harris, Inez Williams, and Mary Smith.
