Sandra J. Barney, 75, Adams Center

ADAMS CENTER, NY — Sandra J. Barney, 75, Adams Center, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Nov. 17, at her home with her husband and daughters at her side.

Born Nov. 15, 1943, in Watertown, NY, the daughter of Gordon G. and Jean Lane Shutts, she graduated in 1962 from Henderson Central School, attended the Watertown School of Commerce, and went on to earn her associate’s in arts degree from Jefferson Community College in 1986.

Sandra married David A. Barney on Oct. 6, 1962, at the Henderson United Methodist Church.

Dedicated to helping people meet their highest potential, Sandra guided generations of students during her career, which began at the South Jefferson Central School District.  Upon her employment with Jefferson-Lewis BOCES, she provided career guidance counseling to students attending the South Jefferson Central School and Belleville-Henderson Central School Districts. Sandra also was an adjunct advisor in the Advising, Career, and Transfer Center at Jefferson Community College.

Sandra was a member of the Order of the Eastern Stars, and a leader and member of the Home Bureau. She enjoyed reading, knitting, sewing, baking and cooking, interior decorating, and her flower gardens. Sandra’s husband, children and grandchildren were her heart and joy, and she was theirs, with much time spent taking family trips and sunset drives, attending music concerts and sporting events, and relaxing at the lake. She was a loving, and much loved, wife, mother, grandmother, sibling, aunt, and friend.

She is survived by her husband, David, Adams Center, two daughters, Julie Barney, Guilderland, NY; Deanna (Kevin) Barney-Sischo, Guilderland, NY; her grandchildren, Emily and Andrew Sischo, two sisters, Jo Ann (Thomas) Murphy and Cheryl Babcock, and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend its thanks and gratitude to the medical professionals and staff at Samaritan’s Oncology Hematology practice (formerly North Country Oncology and Hematology), Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, Samaritan Medical Center, and Hospice of Jefferson County.

The memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, at the Carpenter-Stoodley Funeral Home, Belleville, with Pastor Cathy Hamilton officiating. Calling hours will be held 3 to 7 p.m.  Tuesday, Nov. 27, at the funeral home.
