State police identify victim in Brownville pedestrian accident

BROWNVILLE, NY —  On Oct. 9, 2020, at 8:44 pm, State Police were dispatched to a report of a truck/pedestrian accident at the intersection of Bridge Street and State Route 12E in the village of Brownville.

The preliminary investigation has revealed Paul R. Sanford, 78, Brownville, NY, was attempting to cross the intersection diagonally when he was struck in the intersection by a pickup truck operated by Raymond T. Coates, 76, who was attempting to make a left hand turn onto State Route 12E from Bridge Street.

Mr. Sanford was airlifted by LifeNet to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse and was listed in critical condition but is expected to survive, troopers said.

Mr. Sanford was wearing dark clothing and was not utilizing a crosswalk, troopers said.

No charges are anticipated in this case.

New York State Police were assisted at the scene by Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, Brownville Fire Department, and Guilfoyle Ambulance.
