GOUVERNEUR, NY — On Feb. 21, 2021, at approximately 5:15 a.m., State Police responded to a report of a two-vehicle collision located on US Highway 11 near Bristol Road in the town of Gouverneur.
An investigation at the scene revealed that a horse-drawn Amish buggy occupied by 23-year-old Levi L. Swartzentruber Jr., and 20-year-old Mose L. Swartzentruber, both of Antwerp, was struck by a 2002 Ford Expedition operated by 36-year-old James R. Shuster Jr., of Brushton.
The horse was severely injured and was dispatched by law enforcement.
Mose Swartzentruber was transported to Gouverneur Hospital by Gouverneur Rescue for leg and shoulder pain.
St. Lawrence County Coroner Kevin Crosby responded to the scene and pronounced Levi L. Swartzentruber Jr. deceased. Coroner Crosby authorized removal of his body from the scene.
This crash remains under investigation.
State Police were assisted by the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office.
