SYRACUSE, NY — Syracuse Hancock International Airport (SYR) is advising passengers, employees, and airport visitors to plan extra travel time as the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) begins a major resurfacing project along Interstate 81 that may impact access to the airport during certain times.
The project will resurface and improve a stretch of I‑81 between Exits 5B‑5A‑4B (Hiawatha Boulevard / Destiny USA / Bear Street) and Exit 8 (U.S. Route 11 / Mattydale). While construction is not occurring at the airport, overnight and early morning lane and ramp closures south of SYR may result in delays for travelers approaching the airport from the south.
Work is scheduled to begin Sunday, May 3, 2026, and is expected to continue through Fall 2026. To minimize traffic disruptions, NYSDOT has indicated most construction activities will take place during evening and early morning hours, though traffic pattern changes are expected.
“Although this construction is not taking place on airport property, it has the potential to affect how travelers reach Syracuse Hancock International Airport,” said Executive Director, H. Jason Terreri, IAP, A.A.E. “We encourage all passengers to allow extra time, especially for early morning and late‑night flights, and to check traffic conditions before departing for the airport.”
SYR recommends travelers:
-
Allow additional travel time when commuting to the airport, particularly during overnight and early morning hours
-
Monitor real‑time traffic conditions using navigation apps or www.511NY.org
-
Pay close attention to posted detours and signage in the construction zone
