Virginia R. Gladle, 89, formerly of Watertown

WATERTOWN, NY — Virginia R. Gladle, 89, formerly of Watertown, died Nov. 18, 2018, at Novant Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Mrs. Gladle was born Dec. 26, 1928, in Orwell, NY, a daughter of J Hunt and Ella B. Gorton Rowe. She was one of 13 siblings. She graduated from Altmar Parish High School and Mercy Hospital School of Nursing. After receiving her RN she was employed at Mercy Hospital for several years.

On April 5, 1952, she married Don A. Gladle in Orwell, NY. Mrs. Gladle met her husband on a blind date, just one day before graduating from nursing school. Mr. Gladle died November 1, 2016.

In 1980, Mrs. Gladle retired from her husband’s business, Gladle Associates, where she had worked alongside him for many years building the successful insurance business.

Mrs. Gladle was a member of the First United Methodist Church and was on the church council for many years. She was a member of the Watertown Golf Club and their women’s golf league. Mrs. Gladle had many artistic talents and used them to bring joy to others. She loved spending an afternoon painting or crafting a memento for family or friends. An avid seamstress she made clothes and dolls for her children, and blankets for her grandchildren. She loved listening to music and was an accomplished piano player. In the summer you would find her outside tending to her garden, bird-watching, or boating with her husband Don.  Mrs. Gladle thoroughly enjoyed traveling the United States as well as other countries learning about all the different cultures.

In the winter months she and her husband lived in New Smyrna Beach, FL, where she enjoyed walking by the beach, watching sunsets, and socializing with friends. She and her husband were active in many social clubs. Her benevolence and kindness were well known to family and friends, supporting organizations such as Hospice of Jefferson County and First United Methodist Church.

A devoted wife and mother of five children, Virginia is survived by Karen L. Gladle, Syracuse, Marcia (Robert) Dynko, Davidson, NC, Michael (Suzanne) Gladle, Newark, DE, Kelly A. Gladle, Davidson, NC, and Vicki (Brian) Bolick, Cumming, GA, three grandchildren, Andrew (Megan) Gladle, Tyler Gladle and Chasity Bolick. She is also survived by her sisters Rosie Barber, Pulaski, NY; Phyllis LeBeau, Pulaski, NY, and Peggy (David) Lovenguth, Williamstown, NY.

She loved her family, and God above all else, and she will be greatly missed by her children, grandchildren, sisters, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Calling hours will be 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, 2018, at the D.L. Calarco Funeral Home, Inc. A funeral service will be 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 30, 2018, at the First United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Brookside Cemetery.
