Elizabeth M. “Betty” Haley, 97, Watertown

WATERTOWN, NY — Elizabeth M. “Betty” Haley, 97, of Watertown passed away Monday morning, June 4, 2018, at Hospice of Jefferson County.

Calling hours will be held at Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Watertown on Wednesday, June 6, from 4 – 7PM. The funeral mass will be celebrated at Holy Family Church at 11AM on Thursday, June 7, with Rev. Steven Murray, pastor, presiding followed by burial in Glenwood Cemetery.

Betty was born in Watertown on November 2, 1920, daughter of Andrew and Florence Burns Joynt. She was a 1938 graduate of Watertown High School and was a National Honor Society member. On April 30, 1960 she married Paul R. Haley at St. Elizabeth Church, Elizabethtown with Rev. William H. Coffey officiating. Mr. Haley died March 8, 1997.

She joined Niagara Mohawk Power Corp and became executive secretary for the area general manager. Betty retired in 1981 after 40 years of service to the company. She was a communicant of Holy Family Church and a member of the Sisters of the Precious Blood Auxiliary. Betty was a member of the American Legion Post 61 Ladies Auxiliary, the Jefferson County Historical Society, and a former director of the Niagara Mohawk Power Corp Retirees.  She was also a member of the Watertown Golf Club and was proud of getting a Hole in One on the 5th hole in 1956.

She is survived by her nieces and nephews, K. Andrew (Stephanie) Mider, Carthage, Stephanie J. Halferty, Watertown, Katherine B. (Joseph) Young, Glendale, AZ, Thomas S. (Bennett) Brett, Charlottesville, VA, and Joseph E. (Cori) Brett, Scottsdale, AZ. She is also survived by dear friends Roxie Akins, Black River and Peg Crandall Davis, Rochester.

Betty was predeceased by her son, Paul R. Haley, Jr., who died in infancy, two brothers, Stephen A. and Francis J. Joynt, and three sisters, M. Lucille Mider, Florence B. Joynt, and Margaret K. Brett. A niece, Claire J. Hayes, also predeceased Betty.
