Man charged with driving while intoxicated at Croghan fire scene

CROGHAN, NYKenneth C. Kampnich, 27, of 10487 Route 812, Croghan, was charged by Lewis County sheriff’s deputies at 12:58 a.m. Thursday, June 21, on Route 410 in the town of Croghan with driving while intoxicated, refusal to submit to a breath test, open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, no front license plate and uninspected motor vehicle.

Deputies were conducting traffic control on Route 410 in the town of Croghan to assist fire personnel who were battling a structure fire. Mr. Kampnich approached the scene in his pickup truck attempting to pass through to return home. “A deputy spoke with Kampnich to advise him of the road closure at which time the deputy observed an open container of beer inside his truck. Through investigation, it was determined that Kampnich was intoxicated and was subsequently arrested,” deputies wrote.

He is ordered to appear in Croghan Town Court.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by NY State Department of Environmental Conservation police.
